You be the Judge

2021

In this video, Australian survivor of child sexual abuse, Marita Murphy, tells of being raped as a 7-year-old while in an informal foster care situation.

Although adults - including her mother - were told of what happened, there was no redress for Marita.

Resultant behaviour problems led to Marita leaving school at the age of 12. She went on to have a successful career in the house racing industry.

Marita reported the rape to police in 2013. After the police dropped the criminal case (insufficient evidence) Marita brought a civil case against the alleged rapist; the judge decided the events happened too long ago.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
