Wards of the State

Karlos Dillard

2021

Karlos Dillard is a Transracial Adoptee who was adopted from the Michigan State foster care system at the age of 9.

In addition to his public speaking and advocacy work, Karlos has a podcast in which he speaks to other Americans who have been in the foster care system and/or adopted.

As he says on his website, the podcasts "shine a light on what it really is like being in the foster care and adoption systems.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
