2025

Good American Family (2025) is an American drama series based on the adoption of Ukrainian born Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), a child with dwarfism.

In this article, journalist Velvet Winter tells the story behind the television series.

According to Winter, Natalia was first adopted in 2008 by an American couple living in New Hampshire. In 2010, that couple returned Natalia to the system and she was adopted by the Barnetts.

Natalia’s birth certificate stated she was born in 2003, but her adoptive parents had an Indiana court change the birth year to 1989.

After the change in birth year, Natalia’s parents moved her into her own apartment. They also help her to get disability payments.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
