United States of Tara

2009

United States of Tara (2009-2011) is an American comedy-drama series starring Toni Collette as Tara Gregson, an artist and mother coping with DID (dissociative identity disorder).

At the end of Series 2, we find out that Tara and her sister, Charmaine Craine (Rosemarie DeWitt) were put into foster care by their mother. Tara’s half-brother was abusing her and Tara’s mother chose foster care while she made other arrangements for her husband’s son from his first marriage.

It is only when Tara, accompanied by Charmaine, visits the foster mother that she becomes aware she has a half-brother.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
