Trauma Proof

Benjamin Perks

2025

Trauma Proof: Healing, Attachment and the Science of Prevention (2025) by Benjamin Perks who grew up in an English orphanage and now works for the UN in New York where he is the Head of Advocacy for UNICEF/

In the Introduction to Trauma Proof, Benjamin Perks writes:

“Trauma Proof is a story about how we can heal from child trauma in diverse contexts and at any stage of life. It is also perhaps the first book to argue that we can prevent child maltreatment at scale through modest changes to and investments in our public health system. It argues that the pain caused by child trauma is not just an individual, it is a societal catastrophe. But it doesn’t need to be.”

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
