The language we use about children in care

Word of Mouth

2022

There's an excellent discussion in this Word of Mouth podcast about how children in statutory care are talked about (in the UK but applicable in Australia) in records kept about them, by meeting minute takers, and even in the wider community.

For example, why is it said that children have 'challenging' behaviours when its adults who feel challenged by children's behaviour? What could the child's behaviour be trying to convey to adults that adults are refusing to listening to?

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
