Split Up in Care - Life Without Siblings

2022

Ashley John-Baptiste is a BBC reporter who grew up in foster care and spent most of his life believing he was an only child, until his was in his mid 20’s and received a message on social media from a man who thought he was Ashley's brother. In this documentary, Ashley talks to children and young people in the care system who are separated from their siblings. Unlike Ashley, most know they have brothers and sisters, but they don't live with them despite the law saying they should.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
