Quirke

2014

Quirke is a 3 part television series based on the first 3 novels by Benjamin Black, pseudonym for Irish novelist John Banville.

Quirke was orphaned as a child. He grew up in a catholic church run industrial school in Carricklea in County Sligo, west of Dublin.

The boy was later taken out of the school and adopted by wealthy Judge Garret Griffin. As an adult he trained to become a pathologist but in the series he does some sleuthing too.

Quirke stars Gabriel Byrne as the pathologist and aired in Ireland and the UK in 2014.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
