Omar Sakr

Omar Sakr is an Australian poet, born to Lebanese and Turkish Muslim migrants. He is the first Arab-Australian Muslim to win the prestigious 2020 Prime Minister's Literary Award for his 2nd collection of poetry, The Lost Arabs. Sakr's poetry has been published internationally and received numerous awards. As a six year old, Omar Sakr found out that the woman raising him, the woman he thought of as his mother, was an actually an aunt and his 'siblings' were, in fact, cousins.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
