MIRRA Project

MIRRA Project

2017

MIRRA (Memory – Identity – Rights in Records – Access) is an AHRC-funded project at UCL, led by Professor Elizabeth Shepherd with Care Experienced co-researchers. Launched in 2017, it initially ran until 2019 but was extended as MIRRA+ (2020–2021) to design a participatory record-keeping system.
In collaboration with the Care Leavers’ Association and similar organisations, the project explores information rights in child social care in England, focusing on privacy, confidentiality, and access. It prioritises the experiences of care-experienced individuals in how records are created, understood, and used.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
