Hiding Behind Tombstones

2023

Hiding Behind Tombstones (2023) is an Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) 4 Corners exploration/expose of the legal tactics being used by large organisations - the catholic church, Boy Scouts, private schools, and even the NSW state - to avoid paying compensation to child sexual abuse victims.

The nationally significant Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse which ran from 2013-2017 revealed that 10s of thousands of children were sexually abused in more than 4,000 Australian institutions.

Some of those 4,000 institutions are now allegedly attempting to have victims’ cases dismissed rather than pay compensation. Some of the victims were in orphanages and children’s homes.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
