Everyone Provides Kinship Care

2017

For American foster care alumnus, Adrian McLemore, instead of more children going into the foster care system, it would be better if more went into kinship care.

Adrian's perspective comes from having been in foster care, and of providing care for his niece and nephew.

He talks poignantly of what it was like being taken from his family - he felt like he'd been kidnapped - and driven to a new 'home' with people he didn't know. The couple turned out to be terrific foster parents, but he still thinks kinship care is preferable.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
