Cousins

2021

The story of Aboriginal Australian children stolen from their parents - the Stolen Generation(s) - is well known.

Less well known (outside of New Zealand) is that Maori children were stolen from their families too - the theme of this 2021 film, Cousins.

The film is an adaptation from the 1992 novel of the same name by Patricia Grace, a foremost NZ literary figure. It tells the story of 3 cousins - 1 of whom was taken and raised in an orphanage and in foster care - who travel different paths as adults.

Cousins was produced by an all female Maori team and features 9 Maori female actors playing the 3 cousins across 3 stages of their lives.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
