Choice or Constraint in Everyday Life

Judith Anne Brooker

2015

Judith describes the opportunity she had as a mature woman to attend Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. She uses the skills she was learning in sociology to think about her life as a rebellious 14 year old who was made a ward of the state.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
