You Should Be Grateful (film)

2019

You Should Be Grateful is the title of a 2019 South Australian documentary directed by Heather Waters and narrated by adult adoptees.

The documentary begins with:
Adoptees are the only people that are expected to be grateful for the enormous loss they’ve experienced.

The Director Statement reads:

“Adoption is a global problem in that largely, it does not address the needs of the child but rather, focuses on the desires of the adults. Adoption is damaging, on many levels, to a child who will then need to live with the effects of that for the rest of their life…”

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
