Watch over me

Nina LaCour

2020

The novel follows Mila, an 18-year-old who has aged out of foster care and takes an internship on a remote farm. The farm’s couple, Julia and Terry, and the other children provide her with a chance at community and belonging. Haunted by both literal ghosts and memories of past neglect, Mila must confront her trauma. The farm is a metaphor for community, the setting a place to explore trauma, care, and healing.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
