Unorthodox

2020

Unorthodox is a German-American Netflix series inspired by Deborah Feldman's 2012 memoir, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. Esty, a 19 year old woman who grew up in kinship care, escapes from her ultra orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, New York, to Berlin, Germany but is chased by her husband.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
