Trent Dalton

Popular Australian writer, Trent Dalton (b. 1979), was in kinship care for 12 months as a child.

Trent Dalton was born in Ipswich, Queensland. Until he was 7, he lived with his mother and stepfather. When his mother was sent to prison for 2 years for drug smuggling, he was sent to live, along with his 3 brothers, with his paternal grandparents.

After 12 months, Trent and his brothers moved in with their father.

Trent Dalton began work as a writer for Brisbane News in 2000, later working as a journalist for The Courier-Mail.

In 2018 he published his semi-autobiographical novel Boy Swallows Universe which was adapted as a television series and released on Netflix in January 2024.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
