Too Old For This

Samantha Downing

2025

Too Old For This (2025) by American writer Samantha Downing tells the story of a retired female serial killer, Lottie Jones, who comes out of retirement when she receives an unexpected visit.

Plum Dixon is a documentary film maker who visits Lottie Jones one day with the intention of making a docuseries about Lottie Jones who, Plum thinks, was “wrongfully accused of a crime” (Downing, 5).

Except that Lottie wasn’t “wrongfully accused” and because she doesn’t want the truth coming out now, she kills Plum.

We find out that Plum Dixon grew up in kinship care, her mother didn’t want to raise her. However, her mother becomes involved in the search for Plum’s killer.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
