The World is My Home

James Michener

1992

The World is My Home (1992) is a memoir written by James A Michener who was raised in foster care.

He tells the story of his remarkable life – of his love for travel and literature, of the hardwork but rewards of writing, and of his political interests.

James Michener was 85 when he wrote his memoir and part of his motivation for doing so was because:

“"I want the reader to see in careful detail the kind of ordinary human being who becomes a writer and then to see the complex and contradictory motivation that enables him to remain one."

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
