The Story of Tracy Beaker

Jacqueline Wilson

1991

The Story of Tracy Beaker (1991) by Jacqueline Wilson and Illustrated by: Nick Sharratt.
Ten-year-old Tracy Beaker lives in a children’s care home known as “The Dumping Ground”, struggling with loneliness, anger and the pain of being separated from her mother. Using her vivid imagination and stories about her mum being a Hollywood star, Tracy copes with life in care while longing for love, acceptance and a family of her own.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
