The nature boy who could

Sydney Morning Herald

2010

In this Sydney Morning Herald article from 2010, Elizabeth Knight talks about a conversation she had with “billionaire media mogul” Kerry Stokes.

According to Knight, Stokes didn’t know whether his unmarried mother gave him up for adoption or whether “the church was responsible”.

Stokes goes on to tell Knight about his adoptive parents who were sometimes too poor to buy food.

He left school & home at 14. When he went back a year later, “his adoptive parents had moved on with no forwarding address.” It was a couple of years before he saw them again.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
