The Monster of Florence

2025

The Monster of Florence (2025) is a Italian crime series based on Italy’s most notorious serial killer case.

The series explores the investigation into 8 double homicides in the countryside around Florence between 1968 & 1985.

Although the killings to a long & complex investigation, with some individuals jailed, the original ‘monster’ has never been identified.

In the first double homicide, a 6-year-old boy, Natalino Mele, is in the car when his mother, Barbara Locii (Francesco Olia) is murdered along with her lover. With his father imprisoned, the boy ends up in an orphanage.

We see little of Natalino Mele for the rest of the series, although he does later testify that it was not his father who did the killing.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
