The Count of Monte Criso

2024

The Count of Monte Cristo (2024) is an English language French adventure series based on the classic eponymous novel by Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870).

There are 2 characters displaced from their parents in the series.

One is Haydee (Karla-Simone Spence), the orphaned & enslaved daughter of Pasha Ali, whose betrayal & murder by Fernand Mondego (Harry Taurasi) is a significant part of the Count of Monte Cristo’s revenge.

The Count of Monte Cristo buys Haydee’s freedom & has her brought to France where she speaks out against Fernand Mondego, now Count de Morcerf.

Andre de Villefort (also known as Benedetto in the original & played by Laurent Lafitte) is the illegitimate, hidden son of state prosecutor Gerard de Villefort (Mikkel boe Folsgaard), a crucial figure in the Count of Monte Cristo’s revenge. Andre has been raised in foster care by the midwife who saved him from being buried alive.

When Andre appears in court for murder, the midwife, Sabrine (Martina Laird) tells what happened at his birth, how the prosecutor was going to bury the baby alive. This is the end of Gerard de Villefort’s career as state prosecutor.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
