The Circus is Coming

Noel Streatfeild

1936

The Circus is Coming by Noel Streatfeild tells the story of 11-year-old Santa and her 12-year-old brother Peter, who face the threat of being sent to separate orphanages after the death of their strict, snobbish aunt. Determined to stay together, they set out to find their mysterious Uncle Gus, who travels with Cob’s Circus. The novel explores themes of orphanhood, the search for belonging, and the ways children adapt to alternative forms of family.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
