The Children of the New Forest

Frederick Marryat.

1847

The period of this famous book for children is set immediately after the final defeat of King Charles I. This king is a fugitive in the New Forest. The ‘children’ of the title are Edward, Humphrey, Alice and Edith, orphans of a Royalist whose home has been destroyed by Cromwell’s men. Set in a humble forester’s cottage but with danger from roaming Roundheads. The youngsters learn to shoot, to cook and to run their new cottage home.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
