2025

Steve (2025) is a drama written by Max Porter & based on his novella Shy (2023).The film stars Cillian Murphy as Steve who is headteacher in charge of Stanton Wood, a fictional reform school for boys.

Set in 1996, Steve is battling to save his school which strives to stop the difficult teenagers they care for from heading into a life of crime. Steve is both a caring & dedicated teacher and a man who is struggling with his own pain & addictions.

At the heart of the film is Shy (Jay Lycurgo) who has been rejected by his mother, she is no longer to have contact with him because of his bad behaviour.

The film covers a chaotic 24 hours in which the local politician visits, Steve finds out the school is being sold soon, a documentary film is being made at the school, and Shy makes a fateful decision.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too.
