Something Like Home (Ages 9+)

Andrea Beatriz Arango

2023

In Andrea Beatriz Arango’s Something Like Home (2023), Laura Rodriguez is determined to return to her parents after being placed in the care of her aunt, and hopes that rescuing and training a puppy to become a therapy dog might help her family get better so they can be together again. Told through heartfelt, accessible verse, this moving story explores kinship care from a child’s perspective, including separation from parents, the uncertainty of temporary placements, feelings of guilt and not belonging, and the deep longing for family, stability and a place to call home.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
