Simone Biles Rising

2024

Simone Biles Rising (2024) is a documentary released ahead of the Paris Olympic Games.

The documentary explores the champion gymnast’s childhood in foster care & subsequent adoption, the overwhelming shame she felt after dropping out of the 2020 Olympics, and her preparation for 2024 Games.

Simone Biles has tattooed on her collar bone the line of a poem from Maya, And Still I Rise, because, as she says in the documentary, she has always risen.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
