Rocks

2021

Rocks is a British coming-of-age drama film, directed by Sarah Gavron and released in 2019. The film stars Bukky Bakray as Olushola, nicknamed "Rocks", a Black British teenage girl in London whose troubled single mother abandons her and her younger brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu), forcing them to fend for themselves and try to avoid being taken into care by the authorities, with the help of loyal friend Sumaya (Kosar Ali) and others.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
