Queensland's child safety department has been dubbed an 'expensive failure'

ABC News

2026

On 18 May 2025, the Queensland Government announced a Commission of Inquiry into the Child Safety System.

The Commission started on1 July 2025 & the final report to the Government was submitted on 22 May 2026.

According to Eden Gillespie (ABC News), the commissioner Paul Anastassiou has said the department “needs to be rebuilt from the ground up” beginning with “shift children out of the $1bn residential care system, where they've experienced harm, abuse and neglect”.

The inquiry has also recommended a focus on “family-based care after decades of underinvestment in kinship and foster care”.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
