Patricia Cornwell on Her Dark Childhood and Best-Selling Novels

The Book Review

2026

Patricia Cornwell was recently featured on The New York Times “Book Review” podcast hosted by Gilbert Cruz.

In the May 2026 episode, Cruz interviewed Cornwell about her new memoir, True Crime, which details her dark childhood including her time in foster care “with a terrible foster mother”.

The conversation then moves into her life as a writer, including starting out as a journalist.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
