One for the Murphys

Lynda Mullaly Hunt

2012

One for the Murphys (2012) is a YA novel by American writer Lynda Mullaly Hunt.

Carley Connors is a tough, funny 12-year-old girl who had spent most of her childhood in Las Vegas but who is placed into foster care in Connecticut when her mother is hospitalised.

The Murphy family – Julie/Mom, Mr Murphy/Dad who is a fireman, & their 3 boys – are a happy family & welcome Carley, even if the eldest boy, Daniel is a bit suspicious of her.

But Julie Murphy listens to Carley until eventually Carley can even cry in her presence.

Just as Carley is feeling like she belongs to the Murphy family, she finds out her mother’s health has improved & she wants her daughter back.

One for the Murphy’s (unpublished manuscript at the time) was Winner of the Tassy Walden Award for New Voice in Children's Literature in 2010.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
