Nickel Boys

2024

Colson Whitehead won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2020 for his novel The Nickel Boys (2019) which was based on the Florida School for Boys.

Whitehead’s novel was adapted for film in 2024. The film stars Ethan Herisse as Elwood, a boy sent to Nickel Academy, a reform school. His friend in the school is Turner, played by Brandon Wilson.

Nickel Boys has won a number of awards and been nominated for others, including 2 Academy Awards USA – Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Adapted Screenplay.




Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
