Navigating My Way to a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the 1960s: A Care Leaver's Journey

Karen was 7 years old when she was dropped off by her mother to an orphanage in Brisbane, Queensland. She wasn't there for long but the negative impact has been life long. Karen was awarded a scholarship to attend university in 1960; university wasn't easy by she persisted and by 1969 was a qualified librarian.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
