MP David Wilkins powerful maiden speech as survivor of child sexual abuse

QNews

2026

Recently elected to the South Australia parliament, Australian Labor politician David Wilkins has spoken about being in foster care as a child & about being the survivor of child sexual abuse while living with a respite carer.

According to Dean Arcuri in QNews 22 May 2026, David Wilkins’ father put him & his sister into foster after his parents’ marriage collapsed. While he was in care, he was sexually abused.

“MP Wilkins shared publicly that “I am a victim survivor of child sexual abuse, abuse which occurred during my teenage years while in a respite placement at the hands of a carer entrusted with my safety.””

While the matter went to court, but Wilkins was left feeling that “neither my voice nor the impact of my experience was fully heard.”

David Wilkins was elected to represent the electoral district of Lee during the recent South Australian election.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
