Life of the Week: Frederick Douglass

History Extra (Frederick Douglass)

Clare Elliott and Paul Bloomfield discuss Frederick Douglass’ life as a former slave, abolitionist, activist and writer.
According to Clare Elliott, Frederick Douglass changed his surname to Douglass after reading Walter Scott’s 1810 narrative poem, The Lady of the Lake. Ellen Douglas is a central character in one of the poem’s plots.
