Kinchela Aboriginal Boys Home survivors mark 100 years as push continues for museum

ABC News

2014

2024 marks 100 years since the Kinchela Aboriginal Boys Home was opened on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.

There were an estimated 600 boys, aged between 6 to 17, who were removed from their families by the NSW state and incarcerated at Kinchela between 1924 and 1970, ostensibly for ‘training’.

There are few survivors today, only 49, but they are calling for the site to become a museum to ensure this infamous institution of the Stolen Generation isn’t forgotten.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
