Justin Fashanu the Biography

Justin Fashanu

2025

Justin Fashanu, the world’s first openly gay professional footballer, lived a groundbreaking yet turbulent life marked by racism, homophobia, and inner conflict between his faith and sexuality. Raised by white foster parents, he achieved top-level football success while enduring constant abuse. Though he embraced life with resilience, the weight of his struggles ultimately overwhelmed him.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
