Journey to the River Sea

Eva Ibbotson

2001

Journey to the River Sea (2001) by Eva Ibbotson, follows thirteen-year-old Maia, an orphan who travels from England to Brazil with her governess, Miss Minton. In Manaus, she is sent to live with distant relatives, the Carters, who treat her poorly and dislike life in the Amazon. Maia finds friendship and adventure with Finn, a boy who lives freely in the forest, and Clovis, a homesick young actor, discovering a world far removed from the one she has known.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
