Half a Sixpence

1967

Half a Sixpence (1967) is a British musical about Arthur “Artie” Kipps, a working-class orphan in Edwardian England. As a boy, Artie befriends Ann and symbolically splits a sixpence with her, a gesture that represents loyalty and shared beginnings. After inheriting a fortune, Artie briefly enters high society and abandons his old life, but realises wealth brings neither belonging nor happiness. He returns to Ann, his childhood friend, choosing love and integrity over social status.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
