Girls Incarcerated

2018

Girl Incarcerated (2018 – 2019) is an American documentary series.

In the 1st series, the documentary follows 15 teenage girls locked up in the Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility in Madison, Indiana. Interviews were conducted with the girls plus their correctional officers, teachers and counsellors.

That correctional facility (for young people 14 – 18) was subsequently closed.

In the 2nd series, teenage girls – and their workers – at the LaPorte Juvenile Correctional Facility in Indiana were involved in the documentary.

According to a The New Yorker review on 30 April 2018 by Doreen St Felix, the 1st series felt “propagandistic”, ie, it “does not question the idea of a detention center being the best place for a young person, even a nonviolent one…”

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
