Coroner
2019
Coroner (2019-2022) is a Canadian crime series based on the Jenny Cooper crime novels by British writer Matthew Hall.
Serinda Swan stars as coroner Jenny Cooper who investigates suspicious deaths.
In the 1st episode of the 1st Series, Black Dog, Jenny Cooper is called in to investigate the death of a teenager in a youth detention centre.
Although initially the police suspect the teenager of over-dosing on drugs, what the coroner finds *spoiler alert* is that residents have been used to test illicit drugs.
Episode 5 in Season 2 of Coroner includes 2 teenage First Nations boys who are in foster care.
In the aftermath of a mass shooting in a church, the autopsy reveals the body of the 16-year shooter has signs of old fractures suggesting a history of physical abuse. “He’s been someone’s punching bag” says one of the pathologists.
The foster father, Kent Wilkins, is one of those killed. When his wife is confronted about the evidence of physical abuse – on the 16-year-old, Ernest, & his still alive younger brother – she insists she never harmed the boys. The detective believes her but also points out she did nothing to stop her husband from hurting the boys.
Staff at the coroner’s office organise for Ennis to be taken to live with his aunt & cousins.
