Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.

2023

The Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings was established on 15 March 2021. The final report was delivered to the Tasmanian Parliament on 26th September 2023.

The focus of the inquiry was on the Tasmanian Government’s current (rather than historical) responses to allegations – and incidents – of child sexual abuse in institutions run by the Tasmanian Government (eg public schools and hospitals, youth detention centres) as well as in non-government institutions which receive government funding to provide services on behalf of the government (eg out of home care).

The final 3500 page report containing 191 recommendations includes many changes that need to be made to protect children and young people from harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
