Civil rights, social justice, and the empowerment of disenfranchised communities

Maya Angelou

1928-2014

Maya Angelou, renowned poet and author, had a difficult childhood, spending part of her youth in foster care, kinship care and experiencing trauma from abuse. Her experiences shaped her advocacy for marginalized communities.
Maya used her platform to fight for civil rights, social justice, and the empowerment of disenfranchised communities, including youth who have experienced trauma and abuse. Her work, particularly her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, has been a source of inspiration for those in care systems worldwide.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
