Chilean mother reunites with her twin daughters for the first time in 45 years

CNN

2025

In this CNN article we learn about the reunification of a Chilean woman with her twin daughters after 45 years apart.

Maria Veronica Soto had her daughters stolen from her when they were 8 months old. The baby girls were adopted in Italy.

According to Chilean officials this was not unusual; during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973 to 1990), “thousands of babies were stolen from their biological mothers and sold into adoption”.

These Children of Silence were adopted by couples primarily in the US and Europe.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
