Borgen

2010

Borgen is a Danish TV series, 2010-2022 a political drama created by Adam Price with co-writers Jeppe Gjervig Gram and Tobias Lindholm and produced by DR, the Danish public broadcaster. Borgen is set in Copenhagen. Politician Birgitte Nyborg becomes the first female Prime Minister of Denmark against all the odds. Four series have been made, three of which consist of ten episodes each, and the fourth one eight. Borgen also features complex supporting characters, including journalist Katrine Fønsmark, who grapples with the ethics of media in politics, and Kasper Juul, (who she was in a relationship with) a brilliant yet troubled political advisor. Juul, scarred by past abuse from his father, faces renewed emotional turmoil when his father dies (Series 1, Ep. 8). Initially reluctant to help with funeral arrangements, he ultimately takes control. Series 2, Ep 6 sees the resolution of what happened to Kasper, ‘Them and Us’ delves into his childhood. Spoiler alert: As a young boy Kasper, real name Kenneth had been sexually abused by his father and by his father’s friends. Kasper eventually snapped and stabbed his father, leading him to be sent in a juvenile institution with his identity changed. He evenutally sends Katrine a recording of the news story reporting his father's arrest. Much of the flashbacks are triggered by leader of the Freedom Party, Svend Åge Saltum who wants to lower Denmark's legal age of criminal responsibility to 12.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
