Back in the Day

Melvyn Bragg

2023

English writer and broadcaster, Melvyn Bragg (b. 1939), writes in his recent memoir Back in the Day (2023) that his mother grew up in foster care.

Says Bragg:

“… my grandmother…was not my grandmother at all; she was not my mother’s real mother…I did not discover the truth of this until I was into my teens” (5).

Bragg’s mother was fostered as an infant after her mother was chased out of town for having a child out of wedlock. The aunts and uncles he grew up with were often the other former foster children of Mrs Gilberton, including Andrew who lived with Melvyn and his parents until Melvyn was about 13 years old.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
