Angel of Darkness

Caleb Carr

1997

The Angel of Darkness (1997) is Caleb Carr’s sequel to The Alienist (1994).

This novel is narrated by Stevie Taggart, now a young man running his own tobacco store. He is reflecting on the 1897 case he assisted with investigating, the case of a women who kills babies & children.

The investigation begins with the search for the abducted child, Ana Linares, and concludes with a chase to find serial killer Elspeth Hunter/Libby Hatch before she harms Ana.

Carr also includes other characters separated from their parents. Clara, is the serial killer’s 8 year old daughter who has been living in a foster care arrangement with the Westons for 3 years.

Stevie Taggart includes in his story how he came to be living with Dr Kreizler after, from the age of 8, several years on the streets.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
