Aboriginal Australian Tennis Player

Evonne Goolagong Cawley

Champion Aboriginal Australian tennis player, Evonne Goolagong Cawley (b. 1951), left her family to move in with her tennis coach, Vic Edwards, when she was 14 years old.

Until then, Evonne was living with her family in the small NSW rural town of Barellan.

Vic Edwards had seen Evonne’s potential when he travelled to Barellan on the advice of 2 assistants. Edwards persuaded her parents to allow her to move in with his family in Sydney. Edwards became Goolagong’s legal guardian as well as her coach & manager.

Evonne Goolagong was a leading world tennis player in the 1970s & early 1980s. She won Wimbledon in 1971 &
